THE FIRST OF MARCH

Action and feeling go together; and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling...
William James

This is like the triangle I learned of in my studies of psychology at university. Imagine a triangle with thoughts written at one corner; feelings at another corner; and actions at the last corner. Now imagine each line on the triangle has an arrow drawn each end of it. Thoughts, feelings and actions can all affect each other. If you are feeling bad try going for a walk or doing something active. Or try thinking of pleasant things. Conversely thinking of unpleasant thing can make you feel bad and affect what you do.The theory is that often by changing our thoughts, or feeling or actions, we can effect change on the others. This is a very simplistic way of putting it, but I'm sure you can think of examples.

Another vintage fairy ad.
Here is a poem for the first day of March. It was written by William Wordsworth for his sister Dorothy who encouraged and looked after him. Of course it is written for the Northern Hemisphere but still worth reading here in the South.

March

It is the first mild day of March:
Each minute sweeter than before,
The redbreast sings from the tall larch
That stands beside out door.

There is a blessing in the air,
Which seems a sense of joy to yield
To the bare trees, and mountains bare,
And grass in the green fields

Love, now a universal birth,
From heart to heart is stealing,
from earth to man, from man to earth:
- It is the hour of feeling.

William Wordsworth.
